The mixed media series Love Lies Within My Scalp comprises audio recordings, images, and videos containing hair and themes of nature. This work highlights the underlying significance of culture through hair, and the many forms it can be molded into; straight, curly, braided, beaded. Throughout the images and videos used, the element of organic sounds in the videos and brown skin in the images contribute to the overall theme of being Black and the beauty that comes with it, when the portrayal of Black bodies in art are frequently harrowing. A focus in joy is present in the use of bright colors and natural lighting. Only one model is captured in the work to highlight the importance of self-love and navigating the world as a young Black girl.
